Using Writing Worksheets in the English Education Process

For many of us, the English language is more than just a form of communication. It is also a great passion for the millions of amateur and professional writers who are daily immersed in its complexities. Sometimes though, for the average teenager in school, it is a subject to contend with. An academic obstacle that is as daunting as math and physics. Although English is our first language, teaching the proper use of it is a major challenge for many of our educators. This is especially true in the aspect of writing. In this aspect, the answer may very well lie in making extensive use of effective writing worksheets as primary instructional materials.

Constructing the content of writing worksheets may depend on an educator’s level of creativity. It may however, also rely on the timely introduction of relevant topics. In introducing writing worksheets, one can do so in two ways: introducing pre-written content for learners to work on; and introducing steps for learners to construct their own content. There is no one sure way to proceed with introducing which type of writing worksheets first.  Depending on your curriculum or your primary textbook guide, you may introduce one type first before the other or interspersing topics form both types as the need may arise. In some educational set ups, writing worksheets of both types are given to students of every grade or year level with varying degrees of difficulty. In other institutions self made content writing is especially stressed in writing worksheets for higher levels.

In pre-written writing worksheets, students may be given such varied activities ranging from basic skills such as handwriting, cloze, context clues, vocabulary to higher level skills like correcting grammar and punctuation.

In self-written content writing worksheets, students may be asked to write simple compositions through writing prompts and simple theme writing. An educator may also go on to introduce such structured writing worksheets that focus on topics like spider diagrams, bulleted lists and writing frames. In whichever of these ways and for whatever type of writing, a student will invariably learn how to use the English language in properly expressing oneself.

Of course, every educator should be properly guided by the standard educational methods employed by the educational institution to which he belongs to. Based on these standards, an educator will best be able to construct the best writing worksheets for the grade or level concerned. Aside from the available school resources, an educator may also seek assistance in worksheet construction through the internet’s wealth of resources.
